The End of An Era January, 2012
"Champions. It doesn't matter
where we come from, what we've done or suffered, or even if we make a
difference. We live as though the world were as it should be, to show it
what it can be." - Angel
The Penderyn Campaign began in 1988 with the glorious 1st Edition AD&D. I wanted the archetypal ingredients that have always been the elements of adventure stories: kingdoms with political intrigue, brash heroes slaying powerful monsters, swords and sorcery, dragons, absent-minded wizards, mystery, and a background theme involving a really nasty Bad Guy. Well, it was all there, and then some.
The players that joined us over the decades were the best I've ever gamed with. It's due to their heroic efforts in the face of evil legions, renegade mages, malfunctioning artifacts that warp space-time continuum, phase spider assassins, doppelganger spies, and every blood-sucking nemesis thrown at them that the campaign turned out as rich and detailed and enduring as it did.
I know it must be odd having a DM who designs encounters with mammoth psionic turtles and steals ideas unabashedly from old Doctor Who episodes... especially when your allies include a poetic chicken thief, a cranky river barge captain, and a buffalo... but the group never flinches, wading into each adventure with swords swinging and spells flinging, and that makes every session a hoot.
In 2011, I reluctantly brought the Penderyn campaign to a close, after almost a quarter century of play. Unfortunately, the AD&D system had become unwieldy for my needs as a DM, and so it is time to start fresh, with a new exciting campaign using a new system.
This website stands as a homage to the many years our group has spent adventuring, and to the successful and vibrant campaign world they'd created, and to the worlds and games yet to come.
We hope you enjoy your visit to Penderyn.
Oh, and watch out for phase spiders.
