This is an odd but true story.
Sometime earlier last weekend, I was puttering about my business, and I
began, for no apparent reason, to think back to my original set of
sky-blue dice that came with my D&D Basic Set game box.
Now, we DMs tend to think fondly of dice, however it was odd, even for me,
that these dice would come randomly to mind in the middle of doing
something else. Specifically, the thought of my very first four-sider came
to me. You see, once, perhaps 15+ years ago, I had my dice in the backyard
(we used to play outside in the summer months), and somehow my d4 slipped
from my hand, and disappeared into the grass. I searched the yard, but I
couldn't find it, and after a few days of peering in the grass, I gave up
hope. I later acquired a new blue d4, but for many long years I've known
that it just wasn't the same. My original set was incomplete.
So, last weekend when the thought of my lost d4 sprang surprisingly to
mind, I pondered it for a moment, then went on with my day.
Two days later, while playing with my new puppy in the back yard, I
glanced down and noticed an odd tidbit poking up from under a spot of dirt
where the grass had not grown in. It appeared to be a guitar pick, or some
similarly shaped item at first, so out of curiosity I reached down to
pluck it from the yard. You can imagine my shock when I unearthed...
MY BLUE FOUR SIDER!!
Yes! At long last, my lost die has returned to me!
The corners are a mite chipped (I'm sure from a mowing or two over the
last decade and a half), but the color is unfaded and the white crayon wax
was still intact, coloring the numbers. (Those of you who don't know what
I'm talking about when I mention crayon-coloring on dice are not of Ye
Olde School of Roleplaying.)
So, rejoice, my players!
With the return of my
One True D4, my original set is again complete!
The circle has been closed!
My powers as a DM shall now reach their
utmost potency, fulfilling the ancient prophesy!!
(Um, OK, maybe there was no prophesy, but still, it's nice to have my
die back.)
Anyway, as happy as I am, isn't it just a little freaky that I foresaw
the return of my die several days beforehand?
Regards,
The DM
