While anyone can realistically pick up any weapon and swing it, some classes are practically more suited to using specific weapons, due to their training. Below are the guidelines for weapons usable by class.

Weapons listed under your character class may be chosen as proficiencies at regular cost. Weapons not listed may still be chosen, but at double the cost (2 slots per weapon).

Any class may become proficient in Tight Weapon Groups (see weapons groups lists). Fighters and clerics may be proficient in Broad Groups. Characters taking weapon groups containing more than one weapon not on their class list below must pay 1 extra slot for that group.

 

 
 

NON-PROFICIENCY PENALTIES

To effectively wield any weapon in combat, a character must be trained in its use. The drawback to using a weapon your PC is unfamiliar with is a Non-Proficiency Penalty to his d20 "To Hit" roll: 

CLASS

Cleric -3
Druid -4
Fighter -2
Paladin -2
Ranger -2
Magic User -5
Monk  -3
Thief  -3
Bard  -4

  • Any character proficient with a hand weapon which can be thrown as well (knives, daggers, axes) may throw the weapon at no penalty other than the usual range modifiers.
  • PCs who are not proficient with a weapon double their non-proficiency penalty when throwing the weapon.

 

 
 

Bard

Axe (hand), blowgun, bolas, bow (any short), buckler, club, crossbow (hand, lgt, med), dagger, dart, flail, knife, lasso, mace, main-gauche, morning star, sai, sap, shuriken, sickle, sling, staff, stiletto, sword (broad, cutlass, rapier, sabre, short)

 

Cleric

Clerics may have further religious restrictions or allowances that override this list.
Axe (any), blowgun, bolas, buckler, dart, flail, mace, morning star, pick, sai, sling, spear, staff, sword (any), warhammer

 

Druid

Blowgun, bolas, boomerang, club, dagger, dart, flail, javelin, lasso, mace, net, sai, scythe, shuriken, sickle, sling, spear, staff, sword (falchion, khopesh, scimitar), warhammer, whip

 

Fighter

No restrictions

 

Mage

Axe (hand), blowgun, bolas, club, crossbow (hand, lgt), dagger, dart, flail, knife, mace, shuriken, sickle, sling, staff, stiletto, sword (short), warhammer, whip

 

Monk

No restrictions

 

Thief

Axe (hand), blowgun, bolas, boomerang, bow (any short), buckler, chain, club, crossbow (hand, lgt, med), dagger, dart, flail, knife, lasso, mace, main gauche, net, pick, sai, sap, scourge, shuriken, sickle, sling, spear, staff, stiletto, sword (except bastard and two-handed), warhammer, whip
