GENERAL HISTORY

After the Undead Wars, some of the most powerful remaining wizards in the land, came together for the purpose of studying and teaching magic.  These wizards became known as the Wizards of the Gathering.

One of the founders of the Wizards of the Gathering was Duchess Omylleiy Gilvun. She was also the one apparently in charge of moving the remaining Wizards to Fortress DuQuo. Records indicate that shortly before the disappearance of the Wizards, Gilvun began acting out of character. She became unconcerned with teaching magic to as many students as they could, which was originally her driving desire when founding the college at the fortress.

Instead she began to focus on protecting the fort and inhabitants from an impending attack she felt certain was coming from the vampire's minions, some sort of revenge for the Wizard's eradicating the Witches who had sided with the dark creature. Records indicate even some of her Arch-mage friends considered her to be becoming a bit paranoid. Before they shut off the tower, however, many of the other mages began feeling the same way, agreeing with her actions. It is unknown what sinister plot these Wizards had stumbled across to spook them. It was finally decided that for their own safety, they would seal themselves off from the outer world for a length of time, to re-open when the apprentices they had accumulated were more powerful as well.  The college as well as the entire fortress were relocated to the Border Ethereal plane.

That was over a century past. You can figure out that except for the very few gnomish and elven magic users who joined them, the Wizards of DuQuo must surely be dead. Even in the Ethereal, one ages. If not destroyed by whatever evil they feared was coming, age would have claimed even the youngest human apprentices by now.

The fortress is sealed with a magic force-field by 7 stone obelisks carved with runes.  The obelisks are within the shield, which is apparently impenetrable by magic and psionics.

Baronell mages studying DuQuo

One thing a Baronell mage and DuQuo scholar noticed is that there never seemed to be a second attempt by the same group to solve the mystery. One trip to the location of the old fortress seems to be enough for anyone's taste, especially since many records indicate run-ins with the copper dragon Kizzelbrekkod, who guards the only river pass through the Cran Range and apparently spends his free time harrassing travelers in Kalys Forest.

Something else that set our party apart from the others is it actually saw the fort, or at least knew exactly where it was thanks to the asperii, and returned to tell of it. No one else who's actually seen the ethereally displaced fort has made it back alive with their mind intact. So, the Baronnel sages reason, there must be something special about your group that caused the sprites to do less damage to you than to everyone else who's ventured down to discover the secret of the Wizards.

Dol Kathor, Wizard Lord

Vlad used the Skyrmm witches to imprison the Wizards and somehow also got rid of the witches in the process.   Dol Kathor is believed to have recovered the secret knowledge of the dark Scyrmm magic to turn himself into a lich.

Note: "Scyrmm" is the term for witch-magic, the primitive first necromantic arts from which all Penderyn dweomercraft is legendarily descended. Modern folklore believes that this art is still practiced, but solely by the Sisterhood of the Scyrmm, the single remaining conclave of true Witches, that allied with Vladimir during the Undead War in the hopes that his victory would raise them to their former power. It is thought by many now that the Witches were wiped out by the Wizards of Fortress DuQuo during the War.

Ervinellinus Opak M'rimiriei Tu brenn Oshal (aka Ervin "The Traveller")

Many years ago, Ervin was contacted by the Wizards who wanted him to join them. A representative rather than a member contacted him, an old man named "Pethar" or some such.
